In my new role as an independent consultant, I’ve been trying to find information that might help me. Here’s a good list, “10 Unwritten Rules for a Consultant to Live By”.

It struck me because in my previous experiences as a consultant, I’ve lived by the “Fixed Time, Fixed Price” mantra. I think that’s a GREAT selling point. However, it can be painful in many ways – hours worked and the effects on your personal life, the tight timelines, and the general stress to deliver on project plans that are difficult to renegotiate.

You have to balance that reality with your goals and personal life. Do not hesitate to bill for work and do not hesitate to renegotiate parts of the plan. As long as you’re hard-working, focused, and honest, then there shouldn’t be a problem! šŸ™‚

Is that a tad idealistic?
